Sport April Fools

The history of April Fools day is not clearly understood. It goes back such a long way that it’s roots are shrouded in mystery. Some theories link it with false starts of spring or to times when traditional folk were mocked for celebrating the start of a new year at the end of March when the modern way was the calendar year. However it started it is with us forever and over the years there has been some great fools day pranks. so we thought we’d remember a few, did you fall for any?

Adidas’s design of their revolutionary new goalie gloves was a classy April fool example run in The Sun Newspaper. Technology was hitting sport headlines at the time with Predator boots and the a weary eyed striker picking up the morning paper might have believed this one for a moment? 🤣

‘Portugal selling Ronaldo to Spain’ was run by the Guardian newspaper. Portugal were to sell Ronaldo for EUR 160m to help solve the countries debt crisis, there were further suggestions of more bids to come of up to EUR 200m from England’s David Cameron so he would play for England instead. 🤣. Would England have won a trophy if it had happened?

1st April 1989 saw ‘Wine em dine em’ Des Linem winding up the nation. A mocked up fight broke out in the background while he presented, telling the audience what was coming in the show, ‘delivered by a highly professional team’. Good one Des.😁.

April 1 2009 and Orland Magic set a prize of $100,000 for a blinded folded basket from the half way line. The double blind folded shooter in the middle missed the basket by a country mile but the crowd had been set up to cheer wildly as if it had gone in, with the crowd then responding hysterically as the poor chap celebrated his win. Turned out though the April Fool was a double bluff on the crowd as it was a complete set up with the guy in the middle an actor.

The Sun was up to it’s old mischief again in 2016 and reported that Aston Villa fans would be charged £5 for leaving games early 🤣. Sure Villa fans will remember that one? Wondering how much it was going to cost them?.

Well we are certainly hoping that Boris’s release from lock down wasn’t some kind of early April fool and another lock down would be no joke. We’ve enjoyed getting back playing again this week, we hope you have too. Let’s KEEP PLAYING and KEEP OTHERS PLAYING TOO 👍⚽!

Book on your match night – more games coming back weekly 👍 ⚽
